some amos outfits // and a peak into the heart.

pride and self-righteousness is so deeply hidden and woven into the fabric of the human heart. how easily i find myself boasting about my efforts and showing off my results. i think as Christians, often "good deeds" and "best practices" become a crutch and idol in themselves. especially among mothers.

i find this in myself so often. i am currently reading give them grace by Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson. it is provoking my heart to such a deep level, and is something i'll be touching on a lot in the future.

how often we believe as parents that our aim at perfect parenting will produce perfect, righteous, well-behaved children. though godly parenting is definitely required of us as Christians - it is not the work that will produce goodness in our children. what a evil thought that creeps within us, that our efforts can aide to the Lord's salvation.

and in these things we deem as "super mothering," we often find such pride and comfort in them. what a slippery slope this is, because not only does it puff us up and cause us to sin - but this tight rope we walk is so thin that we can so easily fall. fall into depression and feelings of failure. our emotions, and value as parents, become tied to the behavior of our children. we are tossed like a boat at sea when we cannot attain the "saving parenting" we subconsciously believe will be the rudder in our children's hearts.

one example i found within my own (creeping underneath, ever so slightly), particularly in deriving a sense of "dang, aren't i an awesome mom teaching my son such great awesome values" was with amos' wardrobe. we had some amazing friends in our lives whom pretty much provided all of Amos' clothing up to about 6 months. Add in baby shower gifts, grandma (x2) gifts, and more - i barely purchased one item for Amos his entire first year. and those that i did were second hand.

it's a tricky thing, this mothering, because i' never want amos to put excessive value or gain his confidence and/or worth from his clothing - it's price nor it's labels. and as strange as it seems, that can be from both expensive clothes AND cheap clothing. amos can, one day, have pride in wearing trendy, pricey items, though he can also have pride in cultivating a style from cheap things and being counter cultural or thrifty.

and at the end of the day, amos is a sinner who will put his hope in anything but the Lord unless the Father draws him to His Son, Jesus. Teaching him to properly order material items within his heart will neither save him nor make him clean within. It's the Lord, and the Lord's saving grace only.

Saying that, I've begun to take my black and white, extreme nature and throw it at the cross. this has been by the grace of the Lord, but fleshed out in my relationship with Ricky - who is a naturally grey human being. ricky lives in the tension and rarely lands in extremes, unless they are clearly defined in the Bible.

And so, I began making small purchases for Amos here and there - because i don't want amos to find his treasure in anything - rather it be in too much or to little. and, even more, expressing ourselves in clothes isn't a sinful thing. i remember talking to a lady who was describing her mother - a lady that can dress well - i mean, SHE JUST ALWAYS LOOKS GOOD. she said, "my mom is a creative at heart and she expresses that in her wardrobe. i always think to myself, if my mom knew a paintbrush she would make masterpieces, but instead - as a woman who grew up in the 50's in the fancy south, she began to make beauty with her clothes."

what a gracious way to view style. and in that grace, i remember that things don't make us sin, they are just often what we sin with. and so, clothes are okay. and style is okay. i mean, obviously. we are going to have some freaking awesome garments in heaven.

so here's just some of amos' little outfits. i don't claim to be worthy to be named a fashion blogger, but most of what i do put on him are straight up DEALS, because it fits in our budget - and he just looks cute in them.

some of my favorite places to shop for Amos are:
- target. just because it's CHEAP and cute.
- second hand (goodwill, st. vincent's, thrift stores, etc.)
- a free clothing exchange at a local church
- gifts from friends and hand me downs.
- H&M (probably where you get the cutest stuff for practically nothing)
- flash sale sights like zulily and gilt group. (if you decide to sign up and use my invite, i get some free cash) - this is where i get my highest quality items and items i feel will be worn a ton. example: shoes, jeans, jackets, hats, etc.

Outfit One - jean button up : target // khakis, carters? from outfit set : gift, Outfit Two - plaid button-up : ralph lauren, christmas gift // khakis, carters? from outfit set // boots : christmas gift, H&M
hat : gap kids with gap christmas gift card // khakis, carters? from outfit set // jacket : gift, H&M // shoes : high top vans for v-day gift

jacket : target // tee : (not shown) baby exchange, jeans : hand me down from cousin kyan, H&M
plaid shirt : good will // jeans : target
First Outfit - hat : christmas gift, h&m, gloves : hand-me-downs, jacket : gift, H&M // jeans : target // boots : H&M, gift Second Outfit - shirt : gift, Old Navy, vest : gift, H&M, shoes : gift // sweat pants (haha) : thrift store
undershirt : hand me down // star trek t-shirt : clothing exchange // pants : hand me down // shoes : hand me down
t-shirt : target // undershirt : goodwill // jeans : target // shoes : baby vans!

hat : baby gap, gift card // shirt : target // khakis : gift from a carter's set // shoes : vans
shirt : good will // jacket : gift, H&M // khakis, carters? from outfit set // boots : christmas gift, H&M

traveling with my baby.

it's been a long weekend. on Wednesday, i spent all morning packing for the weekend for Ricky, Amos, and I - not the easiest task with a teething toddler - but we made it through. I've become a chronic over-packer, as it seems to be less stressful to have too much to choose from than not enough. For our 5 day trip we had 2 large suitcases and a couple random bags. I know, I know... it's embarrassing.

ricky got off work early and we took the 5-6 hour roadtrip up the coast of California, through L.A., to Hanford California where Ricky's family is from. we were going to attend his uncle's funeral - who had passed the previous week.

road trips with babies aren't easy - and we've done our fair share. Even more than that, I've flown with Amos since he was 5 weeks old and on multiple occasions by myself. each time i've honestly only gotten through by keeping my heart in prayer through out (to get through frustrations, stress, anxiety, whatever) and viewing the event like a marathon. i know i have to just keep going until the end, but once i get there - I CAN RELAX!

i like things planned out, and seem to thrive in those situations. this has made my marriage with ricky veryyyyy interesting, as he will do anything possible to avoid planning. :) because of this tendency, i have always went into each flight and trip with an action plan.

i wanted to make a list of baby/toddler traveling tips i've learned along the way.

i'm still no expert. i honestly always look like the frazzled woman with bags falling off my shoulders, and crazy in my eyes. but i think i've gotten a little better over the past 15 months.

taking a long pitstop and letting amos feel the air on a road trip up the coast when amos was 4 or so months old.
some entertainment (from plane ride, but applies anywhere) and some car entertainment. mirror and sophie.

Amos helping out with some of the long hours of driving.

Stopping about an hour away from home during a road trip up the coast because Amos wouldn't stop crying.

Road Trips

Infant:
- When Amos was a baby the biggest thing was to FILL HIM TO THE BRIM WITH MILK and get him super sleepy right before we left. I also prepared for milk stops every 2 to 3 hours.

Toddler: (Now that Amos is older, it's actually a lot more difficult to keep him entertained because his little legs want to run around.)
- Run them into the ground the day you are planning to leave. Get them outside. Play tag, throw around a ball, let them exert all that toddler energy so they will crash in the car.
- Leave at nap time, and if possible (and even better), leave at bedtime. When we do this Amos is guaranteed to sleep the entire trip.
- Bring a bag (or basket) of car approved snacks. I try to avoid processed snacks, but traveling is the best situation to bust them out. They prepackaged and cleaner than handing them blueberries (CAN YOU IMAGINE?). So find your Annie's bunnies and Mum Mums - this is the time to get them. Keep this in your reach to give child to stall before the dinner stop.
- Bring a bag (or basket) of BOOKS. I feel as if books have more longevity in entertaining in the car than toys. On this last trip I brought about 40 books and Amos went through them all, because on our way back we left post nap time (BAD IDEA) and he was bored 5 minutes into the drive.
- Reading the books to them will prolong the entertainment value and time span of each book.
- Bring a kid friendly CD you can sing too. This is a great last resort. The entire last hour of our drive into LA on Saturday was Ricky and I singing and creating verses for Wheels on the Bus. It was insane, but Amos made it through.
- If your trip is 3+ hours and you know they won't stay asleep, plan for a lengthy stop for them to run around. On our way there, to avoid LA traffic, we stopped right before the city and had a long, leisurely dinner and then let Amos run free. Once he was stuffed and tired, he slept the rest of the way there.
- Water cups! 2 in case they throw the first one out of your reach.
- GPS. check traffic beforehand and along the way. do what you can to get there as quickly as possible - and organize stops to avoid sitting in traffic.

- and the biggest suggestion I have is WAIT to bring out your entertainment ammo until they are generally in need of it. if you throw all your big tricks out the first hour, when they would have been content staring out the window, you'll be desperate your last hour.

Add babywearing in the bathroom (reality when flying by yourself) and some lay out time during layover.
bundling amos up on his second plane trip at 6 weeks. our second flight was delayed because of snow and i had to entertain him for a 6 hour layover! ahh!
snacks, snacks, and more snacks!!

taking turns with amos on our plane ride to st. louis over Christmas.
when amos was small he would sleep through our entire travel days.

Plane Rides

Infant:
- Keep them awake until on plane.
- Time your nursing or bottle for the ascent (and descent) - this probably isn't as important if they gladly take a pacifier. It helps with pressure, and can calm them.
- Family boarding. Get close to the front, so you can get off sooner - because I've noticed Amos got the fussiest after landing and in the cabin waiting.
- Window seat is better - especially for nursing.
- Change the diaper right before, and if the baby is fussy. Change the diaper in the bathroom and TAKE YOUR TIME in there. It's a time killer - and it's relaxing to get away from everyone. No one will be upset if you are in there for a long time and come out with a baby.
- Pay the extra $50 for a nonstop if you have too. It will be worth your sanity.
- If you have to have a layover. Get one that gives you enough time to change a diaper and get to your terminal.
- Bring a baby carrier. Forget the stroller.

The younger Amos was, the easier it was to travel with him. He honestly slept through most the flights, or nursed through them.

Toddler:
- If you are a couple, have your husband go in at family boarding to get a seat (he might have to explain his plan) and then wait until final boarding before you and toddler board. Then he can have more time to run around and less time to be frustrated at the small space.
- Upon boarding (especially if you are alone), put diaper bag in middle seat. Usually people will avoid sitting by you anyway, because you have a child, and if it's not a full flight, you may get away with having that seat free the whole flight. This has happened to me almost every flight. Of course, if they ask you to move it - move it with a smile. Chances are they like babies and want to help entertain them.
- WINDOW SEATS = FREE ENTERTAINMENT.
- load iphone with at least one or two episodes of yo gabba gabba (even if you are a TV no-no, this is a time you will want to make an exception) and a toddler game or two.
- transfer your diaper bag into a backpack and check everything else so you can have all your hands. (especially important if traveling alone).
- ditch stroller and use baby carrier.
- Fill bag with SNACKS (as stated above), sippy cup with 1/2 juice, 1/2 water or something special for them to suck on on ascent or descent to help with ears.
- Nurse them on ascent and descent if possible, or give them bottle, or pacifier.
- Skip the in-flight drink. I've spilled mine twice.
- Purchase a couple new books and toys for fresh entertainment.
- Time flight during nap. I'd rather have a baby who fusses for the first 15 minutes, but then sleeps on me the final 2 1/2 hours. Takes way less energy and people will be okay.
- I'd try and rock baby to sleep a couple times prior to flight so if you have to, he or she is use to going to sleep that way.
- Let them tear apart the skymall magazine. it's free and they love it.
- Don't be afraid to hog the bathroom for awhile (like I stated above) to buy time and give them something fresh to look at. Just let them look in the mirror for awhile.
- Walk the aisles. I've done this an entire flight before. Amos has kicked people on accident, but at least he wasn't screaming.
- Old people are usually the nicest. Even business men.
- Again, pay the extra for a nonstop if you can.
- Bring extra blankets - two are three. These will help if the baby/toddler falls asleep and you can shove them under your arm for support or around your neck so you can sleep too.
- And if worst comes to worst, and they scream the whole time - you'll get through it and you'll never see the people again - so it's okay. Some people are impatient or rude, but most are genuinely kind and helpful.
- Clothe baby and yourself in layers so you can adjust to warm or cold temperatures.
- Keep cash, ticket, and ID in carrier, pocket, or bra (i've resulted in this and think it's the best way) for easy access - especially if your baby falls asleep and you have to reach for it. don't carry anything else but baby until you can reorganize after security.

What tips have you learned when traveling with a baby, toddler, or child? I'd love to learn more!

Happy Valentine's Day

IMG_7648 copyIMG_7646IMG_7645 copyIMG_7649 copyIMG_7651 copy

What are your big plans for today?

It's pretty chilly and wet here in San Diego. We just don't know what to do with ourselves. Ricky has work all day and school all evening, so Amos and I are planning a relaxing day at home. Ricky and I did our big date this weekend, but I still have some surprises for today up my sleeve.

Wishing you a day full of red and pink and hearts and love. And remember, if you don't have a Valentine this year - the Lord is telling you He loves you with an everlasting love. It does not fade nor diminish. It grows not tired nor weary.

Today, he invites you to draw near. He is, after all, the purest definition of Love.

"A FRIENDLY VALENTINE" // free vintage valentine's day cards

so, i love this little valentine - why? because it's a FRIENDLY valentine. :) no worries, ladies, about passing this out to the boys. they should get the idea. plus, the colors are splendid and the font is so dainty.

i created a PDF that fits four to a page. i suggest matte photo paper or cardstock. i bought a cheap pack in the stationary aisle at target. works out perfectly.

and if you really want to pour out your heart and give this to an ex or old flame, these are the words that were found inside. you can print this side out and glue to pack side. or if you are really tech savvy and print it on the back as it lays out exactly as the front. (flip the paper so it feeds the other side).

enjoy!

here's the original. i like the blues and yellows a little better. :)

brought to you by bad madge & company - a unique vintage/antique treasury found in south park in san diego. check it out! just a visit is it's own glorious experience.

sharing the love.

_cards

i bought two dollar boxes of valentine's day cards for amos to pass out to all his friends. we decided on the wild animals, because he really isn't into disney characters, justin bieber, or dora the explorer. these were his best option.

plus, one of his favorite show off things is when i ask:

amos, what sounds do tigers make

where he responds with a passionate:

ROAR!

CURMPLEonmyheadbehindmyback

we didn't get too far with the addressing, as amos thought it'd be fun to crumple every valentine up and put them on top of his head while running around the living room.

and yes, it's true, i have a little BOY. (getting more rambunctious by the day)

don't be alarmed if you receive a valentine in the mail that's ripped in two - all the loves from amos. ;)

boys and their block towers.

towerblocksanddadprofile
morestackblocksfeet

on monday and tuesday evenings ricky goes to work early in the morning, and immediately after his workday is done he heads over to campus for his graduate school classes. these evenings i try to get amos in bed between 7:00-8:00, so I have some good alone time to get a lot of things done. Ricky usually comes in around 9:30, gives me a kiss, and sneaks in to peek in on amos sound asleep in his crib.

but once in a blue moon - on those crazier days - he comes home to amos awake. it's like a prize for him and for Amos. usually around 5:30 amos starts asking for "dada" and standing at the door pointing. i have to remind him dad is hard at work and school, and he'll be home tomorrow evening. the same thing happened today, but fortunately amos was on some crazy pills and was still awake at 9:15 when Ricky got home.

and so what do these two boys do, even with my sounds advice on doing something peaceful to get amos in a "bedtime" mood, they PLAY. they play "dogs" - ricky crawls around the chair and sneaks up on amos. they play planes. they play ball. and tonight they built towers with blocks.

i had to sneak in and spy on their time, because they are both so happy being together. family is such a beautiful thing. it lights up even our small one bedroom apartment with love.

i love these two because you can see such concentration and a sense of accomplishment. he is getting so smart, it's unbelievable. he can say over a hundred words (no joke, this kid is a talker) and is understanding more and more every day.

it just keeps getting better.
